Who We Are
The Brown County Library System, the first county-wide system in Wisconsin, was created in 1968 when the Kellogg Public Library in Green Bay and the De Pere Public Library combined to give all county residents easier access to library materials and services.
In 1980 and 1993, we were named Wisconsin Library of the Year. In 1994, Library Journal and Gale Research Inc. recognized our effective, diverse and efficient service to the community by naming us the 'National Library of the Year.' In 2023, the library was one again named Wisconsin Library of the Year.
Today, we are comprised of a Central Library, eight branches and bookmobile, and serve over 80% of the households in Brown County, circulate over 2.3 million materials annually and support lifelong education, cultural enrichment, leisure activities, and economic development by providing access to informational and educational resources.
We appreciate the variety of support we receive from our community, including those who invest their time and talents through volunteerism with us. Due to our community's generous support, all of our volunteer opportunities at each of our Brown County Library locations are currently filled. Please periodically check our website for updates: browncountylibrary.org/volunteer. Please also check out our Friends of the Brown County Library website if you are interested in other volunteer opportunities that support literacy initiatives in our community: browncountylibraryfriends.org.
What We Do
The Brown County Library system provides all residents of Brown County access to information and ideas from throughout the world in support of lifelong education, cultural enrichment, responsible citizenship, leisure activities, and economic development. The Library also contributes to this storehouse of knowledge by maintaining information unique to the area and its residents.
